Obituary For Mr. Damon Craig McDowell, Sr.
Damon Craig McDowell, Sr. was born in Buffalo, NY on November 12, 1962. He was the son of Thomas and Martha Cunningham. Mac, as he was fondly called by his friends, transitioned from this earthly realm to new heights on January 24, 2021 at his residence in Stokesdale, NC.
Damon was born and raised in Buffalo, NY, where he was educated in the Buffalo public school system. He attended PS37 and graduated from Emerson High School.
For 24 years, Damon proudly served his country in the U. S. Army. In his tenure, he received numerous awards and courageously fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom. In 2005, Damon retired from military service. Afterwards, he continued his life of service as a postal carrier for the United States Postal Service in Houston, TX, where he was loved by his many patrons and recognized for promoting business.
Damon was preceded in death by two brothers, Darrell Butler and Christopher McDowell.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife, Shirley McDowell of the home; three sons, Damon McDowell, Jr. of Chicago, IL, Shemorron Turner of Katy, TX and Darren Turner of High Point, NC; three granddaughters, Deja Turner of Killeen, TX, Shamarria and D'Aundria Turner of High Point, NC; loving parents, Martha and Thomas Cunningham of Cheektowaga, NY; three sisters, Carol Rainey and Emily Jernison of Buffalo, NY and Janie Santiago of Cheektowaga, NY; two brothers, Miles McDowell of Buffalo, NY and Keith McDowell (Andrea) of Tampa, FL; a cherished mother-in-law, Mable Turner of High Point, NC; special friends, Shafer Gilliam of Raleigh, NC, Robert Bobb of Buffalo, NY; a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws, other relatives and friends to mourn his loss.
A private funeral service will be held Sunday, January 31, 2021 at Phillips Funeral Service Chapel. Mr. McDowell may be viewed on Saturday, January 30, 2021 at Phillips Funeral Service Chapel from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
Final arrangements are entrusted to Phillips Funeral Service, Inc.

17yrs ago I met then SFC McDowell at 3rd Signal Brigade. We worked in the S-3 together. He was a good leader/mentor and friend. I am sorry for your families loss. You will be on my prayers

Mr. and Mrs. Cunningham & family and Shirley, you're in my heart and thoughts at this time. My Heavenly Father placed "MAC" in my life for 32 years and I want to thank him for that. Mac maybe be gone, but he left me all the great memories. Mac is one of the best friend a person could have in their life. Best friend are forever and he will always be that. My brother I will truly miss you. The memories we shared will never be forgotten, you will always be in my heart. I will always be there for your family you can count on me. You were truly a real brother that I can count for anything. Just a few months months ago we spent a week together at my place. I enjoyed and will cherish those times forever. All times we spent together in Germany and Fort Hood was really great. My heart is really hurting, all I can do is think of all the great times we shared together. My Brother I'm still in shock. I just wanna say you was a pure and genuine person.I will miss our conversation about life and our service time together in Korea. You was like a big brother to me I would often seek out your advice on life issues. My brother I don't even know what to say man, I'm hurt, I'm at a loss for words. Totally unexpected when I got the text of your passing the other day. I have thought of the many times you have mad me laugh over the years. I will have to take those memories with me my brother.
