A native son of Savannah, GA, Robert Bruce Sherman, Jr. was born on July 27, 1946. In 1964, in pursuit of a higher education, Robert left his beloved hometown of Savannah to attend South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, SC. It was there that he obtained a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in chemistry. On the campus of South Carolina State University, Robert became a science teacher and Vice Principal at Felton Laboratory School for several years. Robert served as Vice Principal until he left South Carolina to teach in the Baltimore City Public School System where he taught for many years. During the later years of his life, Robert returned to his beloved Savannah and was a science teacher in the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System. Until his retirement, Robert persevered in teaching the youth and dedicated his life to educating young minds and loved seeing young people learn. Robert’s generosity towards community service extended to various organizations as he was an active member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Orangeburg, SC and a long-standing member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
Robert is survived by 5 children, a granddaughter, a niece, a great nephew and a host of beloved family members and friends.

Mr. Sherman was the best teacher I ever had. He was the kind of teacher I try to be today. Sherman taught us so much and held us in such high esteem. He thought we were smart, intelligent and capable of having great success. And we did all we could to live up to his expectation bcause we didn't want to let Mr. Sherman down I mourn with the family at the loss of Robert Sherman. I had hoped to get in contact with him and looked for her over the years; I had no idea he was right here in Orangeburg. Rest in eternal peace, Mr. Sherman. You were loved and respected and will be sorely missed. God bless you. Karyn Amos Moss

My sincere condolences to the family. Mr. Sherman was my science teacher and the assistant principal at Felton Laboratory School in the 1970's. He was an excellent teacher who took time and effort to make sure every student was engaged and learned. He leaves a legacy of many grateful former students. Ellen Robinson Ricoma

I met Robert while we were students at SC State University. He was a couple years ahead of me. After I graduated and began working at SC State, we were neighbors. Our friendship blossomed when we were among a group of six men to join RKappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. "Rob" loved Kappa and our bond became strong and endured until his passing. To the family and all who loved him, I hope your fond memories of Rob will sustain you in the days and weeks ahead
