Deacon George William Lockhart was born on February 10, 1944, in Butler, Taylor County, Georgia to the late Mrs. Annie Pearl Mathews Lockhart and the late Mr. Jack Lockhart. His family migrated to Upson County. He was educated in Lincoln Park Elementary School and attended Drake High School.
When he became a young adult, he went to work, as most men during his time. He was employed by Martha Mills for over forty years and worked his way up to the position of Weave Shop section leader.
He met Ms.Betty Jean Seay and they were married on November 8, 1969. To the union two children were born, Kayla and Christopher. They shared fifty-four years of marriage. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who provided or his family.
After retiring from the mill, George was employed by Southern Crescent Technical College as a campus security guard. He was well respected by the students.
Deacon Lockhart was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church. He served on the Deacon Ministry and Finance Committee. He was a faithful member and enjoyed going to church and bible study. He was always ready to share a word of encouragement to anyone.
Deacon Lockhart loved his family. He was more affectionately known as “Papa George” by the grandchildren and the great-grandchildren. During his leisure time, he enjoyed going to church, Friendship and East Mount Sinai, playing gold in his early years, watching westerns, working in his utility house and spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Dorothy Mae White and Beatrice Barron; one brother, Mr. Jack Lockhart; and one grandson, Tyleek Hardaway. On Sunday, May 5, 2024, the Lord saw his servant in distress. He whispered his name; he answered and went home to eternal rest. He will be deeply missed by his family, his church family and many friends.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Mrs. Betty Seay Lockhart of Thomaston, GA; five children, Mrs. Kayla Lockhart (Greg) Cooper of Thomaston, GA, Mr. Christopher (Cassandra) Lockhart of Griffin, GA, Mr. Freddie (Constance) Walker of Locust Grove, GA, Ms. Tracy Blasingame and Ms. Tharesa Hobbs both of Thomaston, GA; grandchildren, Mrs. Deandrua (Kevin) Ferguson, Mr. Aaron Cooper, Ms. Keaundura Cooper (Dominique) and Ms. Jordan Blasingame all of Thomaston, GA; Mrs. Leandura Collier of Graniteville, SC, Mr. Craig (Paige) Bailey and Mr. Gregory Cooper both of College Park, GA, Ms. Jada Walker of Brooklyn, NY, and Mr. Josh Walker of Locust Grove, GA; eleven great-grandchildren and also survived; four sisters, Mrs. Shirlene (Jimmy) Jordan and Mrs.Shelia Snipes both of Thomaston, GA, Ms. Odessa Lockhart of Detroit, MI, Mrs. Sandra Hayes of Decatur, GA; two sister-in-law, Mrs. Mary Green and Mrs. Wynita Lockhart both of Thomaston, GA. A special niece, Ms. Brandice Green of Thomaston, GA; devoted friend include, Mr. Dexter Worthy, Mr. Albert Allen, Mr Malcolm Turner and The Trice Family all of Thomaston, GA; a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
