The Obituary
Deacon James “Bud” Hammond Jr. peacefully entered rest on Friday, September 18, 2026, at the age of eighty-three in Thomaston, Georgia.
Born on February 21, 1943, in Roberta, Georgia, he was the son of the late James and Willie Mae (Sneed) Hammond. From an early age, Deacon Hammond possessed profound faith and servant's heart. He dedicated many years of his life to his role as a Deacon.
In 1963, he was united in holy matrimony to Mattie Carol (Lockhart) Hammond, who preceded him in death. Together, they were blessed with three wonderful children. Later in life, he found love again and married Barbara (Stubb) Hammond in 2017, who also preceded him in death. He was additionally preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Angela Ruth Bradshaw, and two grandchildren, Marquita Mathis, Porcha Holt.
James was a hard working truck driver. His career of dedicated service eventually led to his retirement from both Upson Regional Hospital and the Upson County School District.
Deacon Hammond's enduring legacy is carried on by his surviving family. He leaves to cherish his memory his children, Alton Odell (Pastor Diane) Hammond of Culloden Georgia, and James Edward (Pam) Hammond of Thomaston, Georgia; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his four sisters, Mattie Pearl Mobley and Mary Raines, both of Detroit Michigan, and Marie (Mack) Woodard, and Earlene (Harold) Woodard, both of Roberta Georgia; one sister-in-law, Peggy Hammond of Macon, Georgia; and one brother-in-law, Henry Martin of Detroit, Michigan and In-laws, Susan (Hermon) Harris, Harriett Lockhart, Hilary Lockhart, Mary Ward, George Hamilton. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended relatives, and many dear friends.
Known to all as a man of true character, “Bud” had a vibrant spirit. He loved to have fun, bring smiles to people's faces, and share a good joke. An avid outdoorsman, hunting was his greatest passion. He was particularly known for his love for coon hunting, a favorite pastime he proudly displayed with a sign on his truck that read, “Coon hunter fo it all night long.” His warmth, humor, and dedicated service to God and his family will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
