Obituary For Harold Lewis Ivey

Harold L. Ivey, age 84, passed away on July 3, 2026, in Griffin, GA. He was born on March 12, 1942 in Culloden, GA to Mattie (Durrah) Ivey and William (Bill) Ivey. Harold, affectionately called “Hal” by his parents, grew up in Cleveland, OH where he attended Glenville High School. At age 19, he entered the United States Army during the Vietnam era deploying to Southeast Asia. Trained as a military lineman, he specialized in electrical systems, climbing poles and setting up critical communication equipment in the field. He achieved the rank of Sergeant over his four years of service, culminating in an honorable discharge in 1965.

A naturally skilled craftsman, Harold loved working with his hands, whether on woodworking projects or mechanical repairs. Following his military service, he owned a gas station and mechanic shop in Ohio. Upon moving to Georgia, he expanded his technical expertise by studying office equipment repair, leading to a position at the Xerox Service Center. He also served as a diesel mechanic for the railroad, but his true career anchor was in the airline industry. He devoted thirty years to the field before retiring in June 2003 and returning home to Barnesville, GA.

After returning to Georgia, Harold filled his days with fishing and weekly Friday lunches. What started with just a couple of friends snowballed into a large, diverse group he looked forward to seeing every week. In addition to his social circle, he dedicated ten years of service as Chairman of the Election Board, thoroughly enjoying his time in office before deciding to step down due to declining health.

Harold leaves behind to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 51 years, Elouise; his five children, Allison Smith, Blake Ivey, Drake Ivey (Imeekia), Myesha Keeton, and Halise South (Steve); 17 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Ayesha Lakes (Steve), his parents, Bill and Mattie Ivey, and his half-brother, James Ivey. Harold is also fondly remembered by a host of cousins and extended family across the Salem Community, Upson and Lamar Counties, as well as in Alabama, California, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.
