Celebrating the Life of Darling Angel “D.A.” Penn
Darling Angel Penn, lovingly and affectionately known to family and friends as “D.A.,” was born on April 29, 1954, in Barnesville, Lamar County, Georgia. He was the beloved eighth of thirteen children born to the late Annie Lucile Brantley Penn and Manager Penn, Sr. Raised in a large and loving family, D.A. learned early the values of faith, hard work, respect, and devotion to family—principles that remained with him throughout his life.
D.A. received his education through the Lamar County School System and proudly graduated with the Booker High School Class of 1972. During his school years, he formed lifelong friendships and became known for his warm spirit, kind heart, and easygoing nature. Those who knew him best often spoke of his quiet strength, his willingness to lend a helping hand, and the genuine love he showed to everyone around him.
At a young age, D.A. accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior and united with Sardis Missionary Baptist Church alongside his family. His faith remained an important part of his life and guided him throughout every season. After graduating from high school, D.A. ventured to Chicago, Illinois, seeking greater opportunities and new experiences. There, he reunited with his sister Roberta and his Aunt Charlie Penn, who welcomed him with open arms.
While living in Chicago, D.A. continued to grow spiritually and became an active member of Canaan Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend E.E. Franklin, where he faithfully served for ten years. His church family became an important source of encouragement and fellowship during his years away from home. During this time, D.A. was employed by the Florsheim Shoe Company, where he worked diligently and earned the respect of his coworkers through his dedication and dependable spirit.
Although Chicago offered many opportunities, D.A.’s heart eventually led him back home to Barnesville, Georgia. Upon returning, he joined the family carpentry business, where he worked alongside relatives and friends. Carpentry was more than a profession for D.A.; it was a craft he took pride in. Through his skilled hands and strong work ethic, he helped build and repair homes and structures throughout the community. He believed in doing honest work and leaving every job better than he found it.
D.A. treasured his family deeply. He enjoyed spending time with loved ones, sharing stories, laughing, and reminiscing about old times. He was known for his calm demeanor, thoughtful advice, and ability to make others feel welcomed and valued. Whether through a kind word, a helping hand, or simply his presence, D.A. touched many lives and created lasting memories with those fortunate enough to know him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Annie Lucile Brantley Penn and Manager Penn, Sr.; his brothers, Judson Penn, Leon Penn, Manager Penn Jr., Powell Penn, and Dennis Penn; and his sisters, Roberta Penn and Omega Penn. On May 9, 2026, the Lord softly whispered D.A.’s name, and he peacefully answered the call, bringing his earthly journey to a close. Though his presence will be deeply missed, his legacy of love, faith, kindness, and dedication will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him.
D.A. leaves to cherish his precious memories: his sisters, Ms. Enterjoy Penn Thurman of Barnesville, Georgia; Ms. Lillie Rose Penn of Conway, Arkansas; and Mrs. Mary Penn (Reginald) Carter of Fayetteville, Georgia; a devoted niece who was more like a sister, Jeanette Foster of Riverdale, Georgia; his beloved god-sister, Ms. Freddie Williams of Chicago, Illinois; his brothers, Mr. Preston Penn and Mr. Michael Penn, both of Barnesville, Georgia; sisters-in-law, Ms. Bobby Ann Penn, Ms. Wille Mae Penn, and Ms. Cynthia Penn, all of Barnesville, Georgia; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and many dear friends whose lives were blessed by his love and presence.
Though Darling Angel “D.A.” Penn has departed from this earthly life, his memory will continue to live on in every life he touched, every lesson he shared, and every act of kindness he extended. His family and friends will forever hold him close in their hearts and find comfort in knowing that his labor on earth is now at peace in the arms of the Lord.
“Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and their works do follow them.” — Revelation 14:13
