Obituary For Mr. Harrison Furlow

Mr. Harrison Furlow was born on April 25, 1935, in Thomaston, Upson County, Georgia, to the Mrs. Dora Mae Searcy Furlow and Mr. Shead Furlow. He was educated in the public schools of Upson County and attended Thomaston Training School.

Harrison’s working career began at a young age, picking pecans and cotton to earn a living. He later became employed as a chef at the Upson Hotel. His experience there opened the door to other opportunities, leading him to Lakeland, Florida, where he worked at Morrison’s Cafeteria, and Daytona, Florida, where he worked in a hotel. He later relocated to Ohio, where he gained employment at the Ohio Paper Plant. After nearly five years of dedicated service, he retired in 1977 and eventually returned home to Georgia.

Harrison spent several years living in Atlanta. It was during this time that he witnessed children suffering from brain tumors and other illnesses. Deeply moved, he sought a way to help and became involved with the “Ride for Kids” program, an initiative of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, a federally recognized nonprofit organization dedicated to finding the cause and cure of childhood brain tumors through medical research.

Harrison committed himself wholeheartedly to this mission for over thirty years. He became well known throughout Thomaston and surrounding areas for riding his “Goldwing Trike,” often accompanied by his beloved bear, “Teddy,” who rode with him for eleven years.

Each year, usually in June, Harrison would ride, rain or shine, to raise funds for children battling brain tumors. His dedication and compassion made a lasting impact on many lives.

When he was not riding, Harrison worked as a private duty sitter in nursing homes, hospitals, and private residences, continuing his life of service to others.

Harrison was also devoted to serving God. In his early years, he traveled with the Church Crusade for Christ, primarily with the Figero Church of Christ. He later joined Bethel Street Church of Christ in Thomaston and also attended Northside Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Shead Robert Furlow, Harvey Furlow, Calvin Furlow, and Leander Furlow; and four sisters, Mary Frances Washington, Mamie Lee Patterson, Geraldine Chaney and Rozena Hickmon.

On Saturday, April 18, 2026, the Lord called his name. He answered the call and entered into eternal rest.

He leaves to cherish his memory three children: Bernice Furlow of Dayton, OH, Harry Lee Furlow of Palmetto, FL, and Evelyn Denise Furlow of Sarasota, FL; one sister, Mrs. Doris Bolden of Stone Mountain, GA; two very devoted nephews, Mr. James (Jannis) Hickmon of Thomaston, GA and Mr. Bobby Hickmon of Griffin, GA; along with a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends who will cherish his memory.
