Mr. Marvin Joseph Tanks was the second child born on November 20, 1945, to the late Mrs. Rosie Nell Rusell Tanks and the late Mr. Morris Tanks in Social Circle, Walton County, Georgia. He was raised in a Christian home and at an early age he joined Cargle Chapel AME Church.
He attended Social Circle Training School and graduated from Carver High School with the Class of 1963.
Following high school, he was drafted into the United States Army. His tour of duty began on September 20, 1966 through September 11, 1968. He served during the Vietnam War Era. He received several medals and commendations including the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, two Purple Hearts, and the Army Commendations Medal. He was proud Vietnam Veteran, and he let everyone know that he was.
After being released from the military, he became a certified barber; was employed by the U.S. Postal Service, Atlanta Public Schools and was a security guard.
He was the father of one son, Ravada R. Tanks.
During his leisure time, he enjoyed watching Atlanta sports, especially football and staying in touch with his brothers who served in Vietnam.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Mr. Samuel T. Tanks, Sr, and Retired Naval Commander Wendell Daniel Tanks. On Thursday, August 21, 2025, the Lord called his name, he answered, and his spirit Returned to the Heavenly Father.
He leaves to cherish his memory one son, Mr. Ravada R. Tanks of Charlotte, NC; two grandchildren, Maysieo Tanks and Ni'Jiah Tanks, all of Charlotte, NC; three sisters, Rev. Marilyn T. Shields of Oxford, GA, Evangelist Sandra T. Trice of Thomaston, GA and Mrs. Brenda T. (Ronald) Hewitt of Atlanta, GA; sister-in-law, Mrs. Jeanie D. Tanks of San Diego, CA; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
