Obituary For Mrs. Martha Mae Reeves

Martha Mae Reeves, a native of Thomaston, GA, was born on March 10, 1938. Affectionately known to family and friends as “Mot” or Martha Mae, our beloved Martha Mae Reeves was the eldest daughter of eight children born to the late Eunice Willis Chaney.

Martha received her early education in the Upson County School System. After leaving Thomaston, GA, she relocated to Atlanta, GA, to seek a more fulfilling life. She was united in holy matrimony to the late Luther Cook. From this union, her sons, Tony and Edward Lewis Cook, were born. Martha later remarried Melvin Jordan, and from that union, a daughter, Felicia Jordan, was born. Martha also claimed Barbara Chambless Billingsley-Shaheed as her daughter, who babysat Tony and Edward Lewis as little boys. In 1973, she met Leon Reeves, who was smitten by her grace and elegance. He followed her back to Thomaston, GA, where they built a life together and were married in 1988.

She accepted Christ at an early age, and upon returning to Thomaston, GA, she became an active member of Midway Baptist Church. She served faithfully and was well known for her cooking and baking, which allowed her to exemplify her faith and love for God by feeding others. One thing for sure about Martha, she loved her family. She loved hosting gatherings, traveling in her earlier years, was very astute regarding current affairs and shopping. She was always excited to receive gifts from her girls because she knew they would be one of a kind, and she truly loved receiving fresh flowers.

Without a shadow of a doubt, Martha would send a card for any occasion and leaves a legacy that will never be forgotten. Although she was preceded in death by her mother; her husband, Leon Reeves; her son, Tony Cook; her daughter, Felicia Jordan; her brothers, Warren, LC, and A.J.; and her sisters, Barnell (Amos), Shirley Chaney, and Annette (Michael) Chapman, she leaves to cherish her memory: her son, Edward Lewis Cook of Thomaston, GA; her devoted daughter, Barbara Chambless Billingsley-Shaheed of Atlanta, GA; her sister, Juanita Lockhart; her brother, Johnny (Lucy) Chaney of Thomaston, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.

Even in her final days, she held on to God’s unchanging hand and continued to praise the Lord, often saying, “Hallelujah, Hallelujah.” Oh, how Muh Reeves loved her Pastor and First Lady (“Babycakes”) O’Neal, as he affectionately referred to her.
