Obituary For Mrs. Mattie Walton Lipscomb

A beautiful and stunning life begun on February 7, 1939, on the Nottingham Place in South-Eastern Upson County, when Mattie B. Walton Lipscomb was born to the union of James “Jim” and Carrie L. Mahone Walton. Soon after her birth, the family moved to Lincoln Park area in Thomaston Upson County, Georgia. Both parents preceded her in death. Growing up with parents who lived a godly example and instilled in her their love of God, Mattie joined the Friendship Baptist Church at a young age. Moving to Chicago after marriage, she joined the First Baptist Church, where she was the church treasurer, sang in the choir, and was an active member. After moving back to Thomaston, she rejoined Friendship and was active in several church auxiliaries. Primary and secondary schooling for Mattie began at Lincoln Park Elementary (M.G. Worthy) and was completed at Thomaston (Drake) High School. She graduated from Thomaston High School in 1957 as an Honor student. After high school, Mattie graduated from Fort Valley State University, Indiana University at Bloomington, and Chicago State University. She received her Bachelors, Masters, and Specialty Degrees in Education and Math. She then taught school for 36 years. She retired from teaching in Chicago, Illinois. Mattie loved life, and she lived it to the fullest. Her life was effectual, powerful, and purposeful. She was affiliated with AARP, NAACP, Southern Poverty, The Heritage Choir, and the Red Hatters. She taught GED classes and was a tutor in the after-school program for the Thomaston Housing Authority. She was a substitute teacher. Mattie was a Math tutor for students needing extra instructions. Although Mattie had no biological children, she encouraged and mentored her nieces, nephews, and many youths to achieve their goals. She touched many lives. Mattie had a quiet, but comical and amazing, sense of humor. She loved crossword puzzles, Sudoko, math games, playing the piano, flower and vegetable gardening, and cooking. Mattie was preceded in death by five sisters and four brothers. That beautiful light begun to wane. Slowly the light dimmed God, seeing this, sent His messengers with orders to release Mattie from her earthly, pain-filled body. On Monday morning August 31,2020, that light would shine no more. Mattie was summoned to eternal rest. Her soul took flight from her physical body and winged itself to Heaven’s shores. Left to cherish her memories and her great legacy are a sister, Vivian (Charlie Frank) Logan of Thomaston, GA; three godchildren at heart, Reginald (Barbara)Wiggins of McDonough, GA, and Eric (Natalie) Logan and Erin Logan, both of Thomaston, GA; a devoted and loving niece caretaker, Denice Wiggins of Thomaston, GA; and many other nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great- nephews, countless cousins, and friends who will miss her dearly.
