Ms. Leola Weaver was born on September 21, 1931, in Barnesville, Georgia to the parentage of the late Mr. Ed and Mrs. Leola Barrett Weaver. She was the 10th child of this parentage. Following her Mother’s passing which occurred nine (9) days after her birth, Leola was raised by her older sister, Susie Smith. She was educated in the primary school system of Barnesville, Georgia.
Being reared in a Christian family, her connection with God began at an early age where she was an active member at the East Mount Sinai Baptist Church in Barnesville, Georgia. As a faithful member, she served in the choir and as an usher. At age twenty seven (27), she migrated to New York City with her two (2) young daughters to care for her surrogate mother, Susie Smith. In doing so, she continued to serve God where she moved her religious membership to First Baptist Church in East Elmhurst, New York.
In New York City, Leola worked in various industries. However, her most cherished employment role was as a paraprofessional in the classrooms of a Day Care Center. Upon retirement, she developed her own unofficial day care establishment where she continued to care for multiple neighborhood children and was known by all in her neighborhood as “Granny”. She continued to fulfill this passion by
concurrently volunteering at the neighborhood Salvation Army’s afterschool program.
Her commitment to maintaining a quality living environment inspired her to seek leadership roles within her community. As such, she served as the building captain in her place of residence. As a building captain, she was an active contributor to developing multiple surrounding gardens around her apartment complex. For her devotion to community development, she received the award for “Captain of the Year” from her apartment complex at the complex’s annual gala in the early 2000s.
Leola went from labor to reward to be with Lord on January 3, 2025. She was preceded in death by nine (9) siblings and her daughter-Linda Weaver Johnson. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Judy Mason (Gregory Mason); grandsons, Bernard E. Mason and Garrett L. Morgan (Cathy Morgan); great grandchildren, Crystal Morgan, Garrett Morgan Jr. and Savannah Morgan; niece, Marie Smith; nephew, Jimmy Smith; great niece, Gisele Smith; devoted friends in New York City, and a host of other relatives in Georgia, California and South Carolina; all of whom will cherish her memory now and forever.
