Vera Belle Lawson was born February 19, 1923 to Ed and Maude (Griffin) Winters in New Liberty, Clay County, Texas. She graduated Bellevue High School in 1940 and married her one true love Louis A. Lawson, Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1942.
When she and Louis decided to marry, they went to the Vashti Methodist Parsonage where the minister was in the front yard working on his car. They asked if they could get married. He said they would need a witness, so he went in the house and got his wife. The couple were married in the front yard of the parsonage.
After World War 2, the couple had four children, all girls. Vivian Jenyne, Janis Lynn, Belinda Lou, and Karen Darlene. They started their homestead in Vashti, Texas. As the family grew, they needed a bigger house. Louis built a house for the family in Bowie, Texas, where Vera Belle lived until she went home to live with Jesus.
Vera Belle spent countless hours serving and improving the life of others. She taught Sunday school and has volunteered at the Bowie Hospital, nursing homes, VFW Ladies Auxiliary and other organizations. God’s Table was perhaps the mission she loved most. You could find her most days washing dishes and giving food and smiles to anyone in need. She was a devoted member of the First Freewill Baptist Church in Bowie, Texas, for 65 years and the Pleasant Mound Freewill Baptist (Rock Church) in Buffalo Springs, Texas.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Louis, daughter Karen, and grandsons Ben Gary and John Gary.
Vera Belle is survived by daughters Jenyne and husband Richard Fenoglio of Bellevue, Janis Gary of Bowie, Belinda and husband Donnie Seale of Vernon; grandchildren, Marsha and Mark Hanson, Cinny and Bobby Terry, Tammy and Billy Wrobleski, Janet Gary, Jeremy and Becca Browning, Starla and Cory Gower and Haley Pittman; great grandchildren Amber and Craig Davis, Matthew and Rebeka Hanson, John Hanson, Michael Hanson, Kasey and Josh Hart, Kaylee Biles, Colby and Chyenne Shankle, Madison and Tim Cockshutt, Joseph and Olivia Tushka, Stephanie Kelly, Lauren Kelly, Cavin Kelly, Tristan Gower, Natalie Gower, and Kaden Pittman; and great-great grandchildren Carth, Cailan Belle, Louie, Kaleb, Anastasia, Havana, Josh, Kasen, Hayden, Teegan, Tatum, Jaxon, Aiden, Nathan, Dallas, Mia, Marley, Kimora, Andrew, Landon, and Gavin.

Ms. Vera is at peace. She was one of a kind for sure. Such an interesting person. God is love. Revelation 21:3 & 4, Acts 24:15
Mrs. Lawson was a modern day" Dorcas." I never called her by her first name, out of respect and cultural protocol, until I was 65, and only then, her name had "Miss" in front of it. She influenced every Blue Bird, Camp Fire child,Eagle Scout, Rainbow Girl, FHA student & church student I knew. Always a smile, NEVER a terse or curse word. She made you feel special- always!! She quietly showed up at every tragedy in my life or sent me a card when I lived far away. Few people compare to her- she would disagree. She never delayed in telling people about Jesus! Lets name a school, childrens hospital or park after her! Belinda and sisters, write a book about her and say what a great "home" missionary she was. Your loss is great, but you each say what a profound effect she had on you. // Oh come Angel Band, come and around me stand// carry me away on snowy wings to my Eternal home// where HE will say, well done good and faithful servant. TO emulate her life's work would be a lofty & honorable endeavor. Continue to Be strong family when you start to physically pick up the phone to call her, but you don't have that Heavenly number. The Holy Spirit does and intercedes for you! She taught you well. She loved you all the more. Special hugs & kisses today as you celebrate how much she meant to you. I am grateful for her influence on my life! I love you! Mary Prater Smith
Aunt Vera Belle was the most wonderful and beautiful person she was very blessed I loved her so much.
I will always remember her house at Halloween--she dressed as a witch and gave "the kids she knew" homemade popcorn balls. I have never met a kinder, gentler person. 100 years of her life doesn't seem enough.
Such a sweet lady♥️
