Obituary For Dwight Aaron Smith
MR. DWIGHT AARON SMITH - Age 68, of Chattanooga, TN passed away Thursday, July 30, 2026. He was born July 19, 1958.
Dwight A. Smith was educated in the City of Chattanooga Public School System, graduating from Riverside High School’s class of 1976 and attended Chattanooga State Community College. He entered the United States Military and retired in 2006. During his military journey, he served as Missile Supply Specialist in Turkey, Supply and Stock Control Accountant in Germany, Heavy Equipment and Demolition Specialist in Puerto Rico, Ammunition and Supply Specialist in El Salvadore, and Senior NCO of Class One Missions in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He served in the United States Army reserve in the 3397 Garrison and the 844th Combat Engineering Unit, Chattanooga Tennessee. SSG Smith received the Army Achievement Medal and the Army Commendation Medal during his years of duty. He honorably retired from the United States Army, Staff Sergeant, after 23 years of dedicated service to his country.
Dwight was an active community servant. Some of his service includes Civic Engagement chair with the local Chattanooga NAACP, Charter Member and Voter Registration Chair and chaplain with the Eastdale Community Development Corporation, Inc., member of Woodmoore Neighborhhood Association, Advocate for fair housing, and Supervisor of the District 5 Poll site. He is the recipient of the NAACP Viola Mapp Image Award for service and the Prestigious NAACP President’s Ruby Hurley Image Award.
Dwight enjoyed fishing, music, sports, and spending time with family. He is a member of the New Covenant Fellowship Church where he participates in the Men's Ministry and the Kitchen Ministry. He is married to Belinda Sears Smith, the father of four; Adrian, Vasheta, Ebony and Christina Grace and the grandfather of three.

Homegoing Celebration will be Monday, August 10, 2026 at 12:00 Noon at New Covenant Fellowship Church, 1326 N Moore Rd, Chattanooga, TN 37411. The family will receive extended family and friends on Monday from 11:30 AM - 12:00 Noon at the church. Interment; Chattanooga National Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Willis Funeral Home Inc., Dalton, GA.

His life of service to his family, country and community sets an exemplary standard for us all, and we are honored and humbled the that NAACP Viola Mapp Image Award named for our mother will forever be part of Dwight's legacy. To Belinda and my dear family,
My heart is overwhelmed with grief at the loss of our dear, sweet cousin, Dwight Smith. Words cannot fully express the sorrow we feel, but they also cannot diminish the gratitude we have for the blessing of having Dwight as part of our lives.
Dwight was a light in our family—a kind, loving, and unforgettable presence whose warmth and spirit touched everyone fortunate enough to know him. Though he is no longer with us in body, the love he shared, the memories we created, and the legacy he leaves behind will continue to shine brightly in our hearts forever.
During these difficult days, weeks, and months ahead, I pray that God will surround each of you with His unfailing love and comfort. May He strengthen you when your hearts are heavy, give you peace when the tears come, and remind you that His promises are true.
As believers, we hold tightly to the hope found in God's Word:

And we also find comfort in His promise of peace:

May that peace guard your hearts today and in the days to come. While we mourn Dwight's passing, we also celebrate a life that blessed so many. His love, his smile, and his gentle spirit will never be forgotten.
Belinda, please know that you and the entire family are in my prayers. May God grant you strength for today, hope for tomorrow, and the assurance that one glorious day we will be reunited with those who have gone before us in Christ.

Condolences to the Smith family for the loss of Dwight. I met Dwight at a NAACP membership drive at the World's Church of the Living God during the Covid Pandemic. He impressed me with his friendliness, knowledge of the city's elections and his ability to help ex prisoners regain their voting rights. He will be missed. I will keep you all in my prayers. I met Dwight years ago at the Downtown Fellowship Club. Our common experiences in the army formed the initial bond, but, it was the daily growth in our walk was the real deal. He will be greatly missed.
